Text Study
The Red Rose Sangha offers text study prior to Sunday sitting once each month. Participants read a selected book over the course of several months and meet to discuss the text and guide questions.
In Fall 2011, we will read Buddha by Karen Armstrong. This well-received historical biography of the Buddha's life was chosen in part because it complements and helps give historical context to the book What The Buddha Taught, which we studied earlier this year.
Buddha is a Penguin mass-market paperback and copies are widely available through Amazon (www.amazon.com), Alibris (www.alibris.com), and Barnes & Noble (www.barnesandnoble.com). We anticipate that we will complete the book in 3 to 4 discussion sessions before starting a new book in early 2012.
Jukai Text Study
The Jukai text study is a Wikispace discussion area for the 2011-2012 year Jukai Text Study taking place at The Zen Community of Baltimore/Clare Sangha under the direction of Ed Sangetsu Sullivan.
Mindfulness and 12-Step Recovery
The Red Rose Sangha holds two additional meditation practices, one at 8 a.m. on Wednesday mornings and one on Thursdays at 5:30 p.m., both in Emerson Hall at the Unitarian Universalist Chuch of Lancaster. These programs consist of 25 minutes of zazen (seated silent meditation) followed by a reading and a discussion that focuses on 12-step recovery. Please call Kathryn Stevens at 368-7250 for more information.
Zazenkai
The Red Rose Sangha holds an annual Zazenkai (Day of Mindfulness) with a visiting teacher. This year, our event will take place on Saturday, August 13, from 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. at the Unitarian Church. We will again welcome Rev. Eric Daishin McCabe, associate pastor at Mount Equity Zendo, as our Zazenkai leader. For more information on the event, please e-mail David Ganse at redrosesangha@comcast.net.
Several members attend a monthly Zazenkai (usually on the third Saturday of each month) in Baltimore with the Zen Community of Baltimore/Clare Sangha. For ride information please speak with Ed Sullivan.
Some Sangha members also carpool to Mt. Equity Zendo near Williamsport, PA, for a Full Day of Mindfulness, generally held the first Sunday of each month. The Zendo's calendar can be found at mtequity.org. Please contact Milt Machalek via milmach963@comcast.net for more information.
